| As a world leading authority
on the provision of preventative maintenance programs for lifeboats
and davit systems. We understood the need for improvement in
the lubrication of wire ropes. This is very critical element
as these fall wires suspend the entire weight of a fully loaded
lifeboat. In the past these safety critical items have been
lubricated manually with brushes, rags and gloves. As well as
being time consuming, messy and costly they are also very ineffectual.
What happens is that the lubricant forms a surface film that
allows water to penetrate the inner core of the rope. This leads
to the rope becoming rusted from the inside out. This can lead
to a dangerous condition where, what appears to be a safe and
lubricated rope is being destroyed internally by corrosion and
friction.
To solve this problem Survival Craft Inspectorates preventative
maintenance programme now offers the use of the wire rope
lubricator, which deals with these issues, by forcing lubricant
under high pressure into the ropes inner core. At the same
time rust, water, foreign objects and old lubricant are forced
out of the rope and replaced with fresh lubricant. This system
improves the integrity and in some reported cases extended
the useful life of wire ropes by up to 300%.
This wire rope lubricator is easily portable and virtually
self-contained apart form the need for an external air supply.
